Tithi : by Sri AV Pathi

THITHI : Each Thithi or Lunar day is equal to 0.9483 of a day so that a lunar month is equal to about 29.53 days. The ending time of a thithi is the moment at which the Moon is removed from the Sun by multiple of 12°. Thus when the Moon is 12° away from the Sun, the first Lunar Day, ‘Prathami’ ends; when 24° Dwithiya and so on; when in conjunction – the Amavasya (the New Moon) to have both the Sun and The Moon will be in the same Zodiac house in the birth chart; when in opposition(180°)Purnimasya – the Full Moon ends – to have the Sun and The Moon in opposite Zodiac signs.
To find the lunar date or ‘THITHI’ – deduct the longitude of the Sun from that of moon taking Local Time. If the difference is less than 180°, it is the bright half or Sukla Paksha; if it is more than 180° - it is dark half – Krishna Paksha.
