Vedanta Desika's Raghuveera Gadyam, celebrates Lord Rama's valour. It was composed when the author was residing at the temple town of Thiruvendipuram in Tamil Nadu. The temple had icons of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita. In the temple idol Rama was shown as Kodandarama (with a bow in His hand).

Inspired by this, Desika wrote Raghuveera Gadyam, in which he focuses on Rama as a warrior. Desika referred to Rama as a ‘mahaveera'. In fact, Raghuveera Gadyam is also known as Mahaveera Vaibhavam.

The author of this great work Sri Vedanta Desika (also known by names Swami Desika, Swami Vedanta Desika, Thoopul Nigamaantha Desikan) (1268–1369) was a great poet, writer, devotee, philosopher, logician and master-teacher. He composed over hundred works in various genres like devotional poems in Sanskrit, devotional poems and treatises in Tamil, narrative poems, philosophical treatises, commentaries on the works of previous acharyas, texts revealing the hidden meanings of prappati-marga such as Srimad Rahasya-traya-saram, Paramapada-sopanam, Amrita-ranjani and Amrita-svadhini and  works on arts and sciences such as Bhugola-nirnayam and Silpartha-saram.
